This one is close to my heart, because I work with military and Department of Defense families constantly. Fort Meade is roughly 20 minutes from Millersville, and for a huge number of buyers in this area, that is the whole ballgame.
Fort Meade is one of the largest employment centers in Maryland. It is home to the National Security Agency, United States Cyber Command, the Defense Information Systems Agency, and a long list of DoD and intelligence community commands and contractors. For summer nights, Merriweather Post Pavilion is one of the premier outdoor concert venues on the East Coast, and it draws major national acts. On the career side, Columbia and the surrounding Howard County corridor host a wide range of corporate and technology employers, so it is a common work destination for people who live in the Millersville area.
Columbia gives Millersville buyers a second major hub in a different direction. Fort Meade sits between the two, so a household can have one person working toward Meade or Baltimore and another working toward Columbia, and both commutes stay reasonable. For entertainment and big-box convenience, Arundel Mills is about 20 minutes away. This is one of the largest retail and entertainment destinations in the region.
The Arundel Mills mall combines outlet shopping, full-price retail, restaurants, and a movie theater under one roof. Right next to it sits Live! Casino and Hotel Maryland, one of the largest casinos on the East Coast, which brings gaming, concerts, dining, and nightlife. Medieval Times is there too, which my clients with kids and grandkids appreciate. When you want a night out or a full afternoon of shopping without driving into a downtown, Arundel Mills covers it.

Military and DoD families. If you are stationed at or working around Fort Meade or connected to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Millersville sits between both. You can serve at either end and still come home to a stable, established neighborhood. I have walked a lot of service members and their families through this exact decision.
Baltimore and DC commuters. With Baltimore about 20 minutes north and BWI rail connecting toward Washington, Millersville works for people whose paycheck comes from either city. You get big-market income without a big-market grind on both ends of the day.
Dual-career households. This is the one people underrate. When two adults work in two different directions, a central location is worth more than any single amenity. Millersville lets one person head toward Baltimore or Fort Meade while the other heads toward Columbia or Annapolis, and neither one draws the short straw.
